CONGO SQUARE

Curated by Jason Samuels Smith

Congo Square has always celebrated culture, tradition, and the entrepreneurial spirit, offering quality goods and services that meet the highest standards.

For thousands of years, the unceded land that became Louisiana was home to over 40 indigenous tribes, including the Chitimacha, Houma, Tunica-Biloxi, Atakapa-Ishak, and Natchez. Known as Bulbancha, meaning “the place of many languages,” this area was a multi-ethnic gathering place, encompassing what is now New Orleans. It included the historic Congo Square, a cultural hub where people gathered to exchange goods and ideas. The nearby Indian portage, a key trade route between the Mississippi River and Bayou St. John, was a vital link for indigenous communities.

Congo Square, a symbol of cultural resilience, was a meeting place for Indigenous tribes, Free Blacks, and enslaved people, where music, dance, and traditions flourished. Rooted in the legacy of the Second Line and Mardi Gras Indians, this iconic space continues to influence our digital marketplace, sharing its vibrant heritage with the world.

Honoring the ancestral spirit of Congo Square (Louis Armstrong Park) in New Orleans, our marketplace blends vintage charm with modern sensibilities.

We offer beautifully handcrafted, practical items made from the finest materials—timeless pieces designed to elevate your creative endeavors and enrich your everyday lifestyle.
